More Cowbell!!! (and other life or death issues your church faces)

Do you remember the cowbell sketch from Saturday Night Live? It’s the one with Will Ferrell pretending to be an obnoxious cowbell player for Blue Oyster Cult and their producer (Christopher Walken) keeps asking for more cowbell all the while Ferrell is getting more and more obnoxious and ruining every take. I recently saw an allusion to that sketch and it really made me start to think about where in the church I scream for more cowbell. When have I ignored the majors (staples like guitar and drums or in the church grace and mercy) and focused on tiny items that only exist to accent the main thing (like cowbells and the style of the worship music)? Ads by Google Where do I allow my preferences for cowbell to encourage people who really should be told to calm down? At one point in the sketch Will Ferrell starts dancing so hard he knocks over half the equipment and when he agrees to settle down the producer simply tells him not to tone it down too much because he needs more cowbell. When have I seen someone who needed to be toned down but let it slide because I liked the cowbell they provided? Have I ever been the one to get so focused on doing my minor part right that I got in the way of those trying to take care of the major things? —I’m pretty sure I have at times. The question that remains for all of us is where do we need more cowbell (because there is value in having the minor things) and where do we want more cowbell but the cost of getting it is too detrimental to the health of the team as a whole?
